The monasteries were built during the Byzantine era, and this is why the region is called Agion Oros ( Holy Mountain ). Women are not allowed to visit Mount Athos. |

From Ierissos, there is 1 boat daily during the summer and 3 boats daily during the winter to NE and the SE side. The voyage takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes.
From Ouranoupoli, there is 1 boat daily all year round to the monasteries of the W side. The voyage takes approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes.
You can also charter a boat and visit the Mount Athos.
